"The 12 [disciples] had enough sense to know Jesus had the Words of Life- they just didn't know he was the Word of Life. He was trying to tell them He was the Bread of Life. God rained Manna in the wilderness and provided something the [children of Israel] could eat every day. That was a foreshadowing of who He is.
Jesus was telling them that man shall not live by bread alone, but by the living Bread which is the Word. He was pointing to Himself. He said if you will do what I say and follow Me, you will have Life. There's Life in the Word."
